Sunday 13th September, saw the Friends of Alfred Russel Wallace at The Dell at the High House open day at Purfleet as part of the 2015 Heritage Open Days organised by the National Trust and Historic England.

The Friends of Alfred Russel Wallace continued to tell the story of Wallace and his connection to Thurrock on our display panels, in our booklet and by looking at some examples of plants that Wallace grew in his garden at The Dell.

A Wallace wordsearch and coloured crayons with which to colour a butterfly were again available to our younger visitors.

A team of five volunteers were present during the day, telling visitors about Wallace and showing them where The Dell is located. Our visitors again included were local MP, Jackie Doyle-Price and we were also visited by the Mayor of Thurrock, Councillor Sue Grays.

We would like to involve as many local people as possible in the project to make Alfred Russel Wallace better known in Thurrock. If you would like to be part of the project, please contact the Thurrock Local History Society.
